Family Pleads for Help Finding Missing Waxahachie 79-Year-Old

A North Texas family is pleading for help to find a missing elderly man with dementia.

A Silver Alert is active right now for Leverne Berry.

He has been missing for six days after walking away from his Waxahachie home on August 7th.

The 79-year-old has ties to South Dallas and family says it’s possible he may have tried to walk to his former home in the Oak Cliff area.

“We know he’s out there somewhere,” said Tameika Berry of her grandfather.

Berry’s worried family is clinging to hope that he will be found.

‘Missing’ fliers are posted near downtown Waxahachie.

“Our entire family is extremely desperate at this point,” said Berry.

They are desperate to find the 79-year-old.

“We’re just really lost right now,” said granddaughter Jennifer Brent. “Wondering where he is and is he ok. If he had enough food or water.”

Berry has been missing since last Monday.

He was last seen by his wife outside of their home along Wyatt Street in Waxahachie, according to the family.

“She said she came back outside and he was gone,” said Berry.

This is especially troubling because Berry suffers from dementia.

His granddaughters say he got lost before when he walked out of a hospital intending to go home but ended up walking the wrong way.

They said he was found hours later.

In this case, family and Waxahachie police have been searching the area around Berry’s home.

“We were everywhere,” said Berry. “The people here have been very helpful as well.”

The family says a K9 unit from Dallas went to help in the search.

The dog picked up Berry’s scent at his home and tracked it near the Waxahachie Courthouse a couple miles away, then the scent dropped off.

Police are now looking at surveillance video in the area to see if Berry got into someone’s car, according to family.

“He possibly did find his way back to Dallas and was trying to get back to his home where his [mother] lived,” said Berry.

For his granddaughters, it has already been a year full of heartache.

“I lost my son in a car accident and about two weeks ago we buried my uncle and now this,” said Berry. “My biggest fear is that we find him in a condition that is going to lead us back to a church house.”

But it is faith is what is keeping this family’s hopes alive.

“We miss him. He’s our grandfather. We love him so much and we just want him to be found safely,” said Brent.

Leverne Berry has a full gray beard. He is about 5’9”, 150 pounds, was last seen wearing blue jeans, a maroon and beige colored long-sleeve shirt.

If you have seen him, you are asked to call the Waxahachie Police Department at 469-309-4441.
