Family Looks For Answers in Deadly Hit-And-Run

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Maria Carmen Alonzo from Wells Point, TX was well to the side of the road when she was hit November 30, 2014. Her family said she was on her way home from spending the Thanksgiving holiday with family in Mexico.

Her parents were with her in a 1991 GMC pickup truck when it broke down around mile marker 377 near Carl’s Corner on I-35E. While Alonzo was outside of her vehicle, an 18-wheeler drifted onto the shoulder, struck her and kept going. Her parents witnessed the accident.

Alonzo’s family turned to Dallas Attorney Marc Lenahan hoping he could help them find answers. Lenahan is offering a $5,000 reward through North Texas Crimes Stoppers for the confirmed identification of the driver.

“Carmen’s parents, her children and grandchildren’s grief is made all the more unbearable by the fact that the driver is at large,” Lenahan said.

Investigators don’t know what made the big rig drift off the roadway, but the family believes the driver may have fallen asleep and possibly not even know what happened.

"It’s very possible the driver doesn’t know that he or she is the driver," Lenahan said. "It’s all consistent that the driver just feel asleep in which case we hope that upon hearing this message the driver will identify himself or herself – it certainly would mean a great deal to the family.”

Anyone with information is asked to call North Texas Crime Stoppers at 877-373-TIPS or call the Texas Department of Public Safety in Waco at 254-759-7131.
