Fallen DART Officer Remembered in National Police Memorial Week

Fallen DART Police Officer Brent Thompson was honored Thursday at a service as part of National Police Memorial Week.

Thompson – along with four Dallas Police Department officers – was killed in the July 7, 2016, ambush shootings.

He was the first DART officer killed in the line of duty in the department's history and died just two weeks before his 44th birthday.

Police officers and city leaders gathered at DART Police Headquarters to remember Thompson and other fallen officers. Flags flew at half staff as the sounds of 'Amazing Grace' echoed from bagpipes. Inside headquarters, dozens were in mourning for the fallen, including Thompson's parents, who were in attendance.

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson spoke directly to Thompson's family

"He made the ultimate sacrifice of his job to give his life," she said.

Several members of the Dallas Police Department's command staff were also present, including interim Police Chief David Pughes.

Thompson's memory will now forever be encapsulated in shadow boxes inside the department. One of the cases holds Thompson's uniform, badge and name plate, and the other displays memorabilia of the fallen four Dallas officers.

The song 'Last Call' was played and brought many to tears, as did the reading of names.

"Police Officer Brent Allen Thompson, badge 420 Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Department," read DART Police Officer Theresa McClellan. "End of watch Thursday, July 7th, 2016, cause of death gunfire."

DART Police Chief James D. Spiller also revealed a street sign in the parking lot called "Officer Brent Thompson Way."
