Counterfeit Bills Show up in Dallas

Store Clerks Warned To Look For Fake Bills

Dallas Police are now investigating more than half a dozen cases of counterfeit cash and forged checks since the beginning of the week.

"We've had reports of people passing counterfeit bills before," Sr. Cpl. Janice Crowther said. "And of course, in the late 80s it was pretty prevalent, but now it seems to be making a comeback."

Wilson's Shell station in the 500 block of Kiest Boulevard was among the stores hit.  Ken Wilson said two men in a car sent a young boy to pay for their gas. He said he knew right away there was something funny about the $5 bill.

"It was just like balled all up. Then when you opened it, it felt like notebook paper," Wilson said.

The two men took off before Dallas police arrived.

"I feel like they (were) just trying to get away with something to see if they can do it," Wilson said.

Crowther said "this could very well be a result of hard economic times."

Police said forged checks and counterfeit bills have shown up at a check cashing service, a pizza place and a sandwich shop. Some of the bills are for $100.

Dallas Police said they are investigating whether the crimes are connected, and where the counterfeit money is coming from.
