The state's top education official has written to school districts, reminding them that using CSCOPE or other curriculum systems requires holding a public meeting.
Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams wrote Tuesday that a recently approved law requires districts using curriculum systems to solicit input from teachers and district employees.
He noted that it also mandates that local school boards "have a meeting to discuss the proposed initiative" and get feedback from the community.
The letter comes amid a continuing controversy over CSCOPE, online lesson plans that some conservatives claim promote anti-American, anti-Christian values.
An effort to kill CSCOPE in the Legislature actually succeeded in moving it into the public domain where any district can use it.
But Williams' letter cautions districts that they can't do so without a public meeting.
