EAS Alarms Accidentally Activated in Bonham & Dodd City

Residents in Bonham and Dodd City had no real reason to be alarmed when Emergency Alert System alarms sounded Tuesday night.

An NBC 5 viewer asked us to look into why the EAS alarms sounded in the Fannin County towns at 10:45 p.m.

Bonham Police Department Capt. Timothy LaVergne said it was not a malfunction but that the alarm was accidentally set off by a dispatcher.

Apparently the EAS button is near the button for sirens used by dispatchers. LaVergne said a dispatcher inadvertently set off both the siren and the EAS alarm.

LaVergne said the department is taking steps to try to relocate the EAS button to prevent anyone from accidentally setting off the alarm in the future.
