Drunken Driver in Fatal Crash Was on Bond for Previous DUI

Harris County prosecutors say a Houston man charged with intoxication manslaughter for a wrong-way traffic wreck over the weekend already was out on bond for another drunken driving offense.

Prosecutors say police in the Houston enclave of Bellaire reported 21-year-old Daniel Armando Mena smelled of alcohol and drunkenly denied he was driving on the wrong side of Interstate 610 when his car collided with an SUV early Saturday. The unidentified woman driving the other vehicle was killed.

Court records show Mena last October was charged with misdemeanor drunken driving and was released on $500 bond. The Houston Chronicle reports he enrolled last month in a program for people facing drunken driving charges. He's now jailed on at least $40,000 bond. Court records don't list an attorney for him.
