Driver Slams into Bus Stop, Kills Homeless Men

Police say two homeless men asleep at a Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus stop died after a truck driven by an alleged drunken driver slammed into the partly enclosed structure.

The men were asleep inside the enclosure along the 5300 block of Harry Hines Boulevard when they were struck by a driver in a 1999 Chevy Silverado pickup truck.  After striking the bus stop, the truck finally came to rest after hitting a tree north of Butler Street.

Police detained the pickup driver, 50-year-old Julian Cadena Cerda, following the wreck at about 2:30 a.m. Monday. Det. Mark McKnight said the driver failed a field sobriety test.

Police said Cerda was taken to the Lew Sterrett Justice Center and has been charged with two counts of Intoxication Manslaughter.

According to a witnesses one of the victims was known to be a regular at the Salvation Army on Harry Hines and sometimes slept in the inside of the bus stop enclosure.
