Driver Rescued from Vehicle Submerged in Texas Canal

Emergency responders jumped into a Southeast Texas canal and saved a driver who called 911 when her car plunged into the cold water.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office on Monday said the woman, whose car apparently missed a turn, was treated for hypothermia and released.

Deputy Rod Carroll says the accident happened Sunday night in China, 15 miles west of Beaumont.

Water temperatures were in the 40s.

Carroll says the 19-year-old driver called 911 to say her car went into a canal and was filling with water.

Carroll, who's also a paramedic, arrived to find the woman atop the submerged car and about 25 yards from shore. Carroll and two other rescuers jumped into the 8-foot deep canal and swam the teen to safety.

Her name wasn't immediately released.
