Driver, Passenger Escape Truck in Raging Floodwaters

A driver and passenger escaped their vehicle after it was swept off a North Texas road covered by swift-moving floodwaters Thursday.

The pickup truck attempted to cross a low-lying flooded road near the Stroud Creek Estates in Granbury. The force of the rushing water pushed the truck downstream, as nearby witnesses yelled for them to get out of the truck.

The witnesses told NBC 5 that both occupants of the truck got out safely.

There have been several accounts of vehicles swept off flooded Texas roads Thursday, most notably at Fort Hood, where nine soldiers died after their military vehicle was swept away.

Three other soldiers were rescued from the water near the vehicle are were in stable condition.

In Johnson County, deputies arrested a man who drove past a barricade into a flooded road, prompting a rescue effort from Cleburne Fire Rescue, Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies and the National Guard.

Dallas Fire Rescue responded to five calls for water rescues Thursday, including one near Walnut Hill, where rescue boats were deployed after a person was reported missing in Bachman Creek. Nobody was found, and the search was called off after several hours.

Parts of Texas have been inundated with rain in the last week. More storms could dump up several more inches of rain through Saturday and worsen flooding.
