Wrong way driver faces charges after passenger dies in accident

Eastbound Interstate 20 at Bonnie View Road was closed for hours Sunday morning as Dallas police investigated a fatal wrong way wreck.

Dallas County Sheriff spokeswoman Carmen Castro said 26 Year-old Juan Ramon Hernandez of Irving, drove his Tahoe the wrong way, heading east in the westbound lanes of I-20 near Bonnie View Road. The Tahoe crashed into the Monte Carlo. A passenger in the Tahoe died.

It happened around 6:00 a.m. and took nearly four hours to get traffic back to normal. The wreck closed I-20, stranding hundreds of drivers returning home from Spring Break and churchgoers.

Spokeswoman Castro said Hernandez faced two hours.  "He is facing a count of intoxicated manslaughter and another count - intoxicated assault," Castro said.

Hernandez was charged and arrested in 2008  for possession of controlled substance and resisting arrest.

The driver of the Monte Carlo suffered two broken legs and ribs and was taken to Baylor Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. 

Hernandez was listed in stable condition according the the Sheriff's office.
