1,900 Evacuees Staying at Dallas Mega Shelter

The Dallas megashelter is officially open for people fleeing the flooding and devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

City officials said the shelter at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center can accommodate up to 5,000 people. As of Wednesday morning, about 250 people were staying there.

Yadira Orgaz said she, her husband, their three children, her mother and her brother piled into a car and started driving north on I-45 from the Houston area before the height of the flooding. They arrived at the Dallas mega shelter late Tuesday afternoon.

"It feels really good coming to somewhere where they're going to help us and any other way with our kids it's feels really good that the shelter is opening their house for us because we don't have anything for our kids we lost everything," said Orgaz.

The Orgaz family says they don't know how long they'll be in North Texas but grateful for the services the City of Dallas is providing.

The Dallas City Council unanimously approved $8 million Wednesday toward emergency funds to cover relief efforts at North Texas shelters.
