Donate Here to Help Forgive Medical Debt

If you’ve ever been to the emergency room, you know the cost of a single visit can leave you feeling worse than before you got there.

Medical debt is a huge problem -- one in five Americans have it and it’s the most frequent cause of bankruptcy in the United States. Experts with RIP Medical Debt said Texans have an estimated $4.7 billion in unpaid medical debt currently in collections. What's even more shocking is that Texans may actually owe 10 times that amount, or roughly $50 billion, when you include debts that are not in the hands of collection agents.

That’s why NBC Universal decided to do something about medical debt -- by making a donation that will help forgive some of the outstanding debt owed by North Texans.

HELP PAY IT FORWARD

The NBC Owned Television Stations, the owner of NBC 5, is making a $150,000 donation to RIP Medical Debt. They’re a charity that locates, buys and forgives medical debt across the US. The donation will allow RIP Medial Debt to buy and forgive $15 million in debt. It will help thousands of families across the country, more than 2,000 of whom are right here in North Texas.

So what can you do? The same thing we did. Make a donation to RIP Medical Debt and help pay it forward.

Below is a form provided by RIP Medical Debt so you can contribute to them. Your money goes to the charity, not NBC 5. For more information about the charity and how it works click here.
