Dog Dumped on Dowdy Ferry Road Gets Second Chance at Life

Dowdy Ferry Road in southern Dallas is where the city's illegal dumping and loose dog problems intersect.

The thick brush surrounding along the roadside does little to hide the sight or smell of dead dogs. Residents like Jeremy Boss have taken it upon themselves to try and clean up the area.

One day in early April he stumbled across a dog severely emaciated and alone.

"This is pretty much the worst case I've had with a dog that actually is still alive," Boss said in a video posted on his Facebook page.

Determined to save the dog, which he aptly named Dowdy, Boss took the canine to Petmobile Pet Hospital.

"He was so thin. It looked like he hadn't eaten in week," said Dr. Emberly Henson. "He was vomiting, not eating, could barely stand at all, and his belly was so swollen from the heart worms."

Henson and Boss worked in tandem to nurse Dowdy back to health. In a little more than four months Dowdy has transformed from a frail and timid animal to a fully healthy 50-pound bundle of energy ready to be adopted.

"Several times we all thought it was time to put him to sleep, but it's like he just would not give up. Three blood transfusions later, several weeks of IV fluids, and antibiotics, he's happy, healthy, eating, running, playing. No heart worms. No intestinal worms," Henson said.

In the three decades she's been a veterinarian Henson said she's never seen a more dramatic turnaround. She credits Jeremy Boss with helping Dowdy make it this far.

"Jeremy was here talking to him, feeding him, loving him. I think it makes all the difference in the world when you give them that will – that somebody loves them – to fight after what he's been through," she said.

Dowdy is fully healthy and ready to be fostered or adopted. If you're interested in making Dowdy a part of your family contact Petmobile Pet Hospital at 972-423-7387.
