Detained Driver Dies After Spitting up Plastic Bag

A man detained by Coppell police during a traffic stop has died after allegedly spitting out a small plastic bag.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office on Monday listed the cause of death as pending for 42-year-old Steven Irwin of Arlington.

Officers helped Irwin push his vehicle off the road when it would not start. Police say Irwin was in the process of being released when he said he felt sick and began shaking.

Police say Irwin, after spitting out the bag, was transported to a Lewisville hospital, where he died Friday, shortly after being stopped. Police are investigating the contents the bag.

Criminal court records indicate Irwin on Aug. 16 was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
