Despite Wind, Crews Get Handle on Jack Co. Blaze

A wildfire that burned more than 2,000 acres in Jack County was mostly contained Sunday, but fire crews continued to several other wildfires across Texas.

High winds helped fuel the fire near Joplin.

Rescue crews evacuated about 15 families Saturday night while crews worked to put out the fire. Residents were allowed to return home at about midnight.

No one was injured, and no homes were lost.

But strong winds hampered efforts to contain an 11,000-acre blaze near the Panhandle town of Wheeler near the Texas-Oklahoma border.

The fire had destroyed eight homes and 26 outbuildings, including barns and garages, as of early Sunday evening. An unknown number of cattle were killed, according to the Texas Forest Service.

Three smaller wildfires were reported Saturday also continued to burn Sunday. A 300-acre blaze in Jeff Davis County was about 60 percent contained on Sunday. Crews worked late Saturday night and on Sunday were also battling a 410-acre fire in Shackelford County that was 75 percent contained. Officials said a 100-acre fire in Nolan County was five percent contained.
