Day Care Worker Sentenced to Life for Sex Abuse of 5-Year-Old Boy

Man convicted of abusing boy he babysat in his Keller home

A Tarrant County jury took less than two minutes to return a life sentence for a former day care center worker who sexually abused a 5-year-old boy.

The Tarrant County jury deliberated just over a minute Friday before recommending the maximum penalty for Paul Joseph Lair Jr., 41.

The jury had found Lair guilty earlier Friday of aggravated sexual assault of a child younger than 6 and indecency with a child.

"He preys on little boys -- buys them candy, buys them Cokes, does fun stuff with them and makes them love him," Assistant District Attorney Eric Nickols said in a news release. "His goal was to have his own day care so he could have a pedophile's playground."

According to trial testimony, Lair regularly babysat the boy in his Keller home until Nov. 25, 2008, when he described to his mother sex acts that Lair made him perform at night.

The jury heard other testimony that he was seen fondling children at the Fort Worth day care where he worked, Children's Courtyard.
