Dallas School Trustee to Offer First-Day Prize

The Dallas school board president is donating $1,500 for a door-prize drawing for students who attend the first day of school Aug. 27.

Lew Blackburn's donation will provide $500 gift cards for the winners of three drawings -- for elementary, middle and high school students.

Blackburn tells said he's also looking for matching donations to provide more attendance inducements.

Public schools in the southern Dallas suburb of DeSoto will be offering their own attendance inducements.

The Dallas Morning News reports each of the DeSoto school district's 13 schools will have iPad drawings for students who attend the first five days of classes.
