Officers rushed to the house on Woodin Boulevard near Cedar Crest Golf Course after reports of gunshots and a man, identified as 44-year-old Cecil Williams, dead in his front yard.

Police said two armed men kicked in the door of the house and started shooting. One woman was beaten and left with two black eyes and several facial contusions, according to eyewitnesses.

"The detective told me on the phone that shots were fired but Williams wasn't hit by them," said the victim's uncle, Freddis McCray. "They got him out of the house and there was a fight and they may have choked him out, that's what police are telling me."

Police initially said Williams had been shot, then the family said he hadn't and had suffered a seizure. Then it appeared he may have been strangled. By Thursday afternoon, police said they re-classified the death from an "unexplained death" to "murder" and confirmed that Williams had been shot to death.

"II am terribly disgusted. You can’t imagine what’s going through my brain right now," Freddis McCray said Thursday afternoon.

Family members said Williams spent 20 years in prison for a series of robberies. He’s been out two years, and had turned his life around.

"It’s been like a truck has ran all over us. Probably about 50 times. It just took the life out of all of us," said cousin, Ladonna McCray.

Freddis McCray said the altercation started with a fight at a house party over a woman.

"They left and came back with a gun," he said. "They kicked in the door. There’s a young lady with the black eyes and stuff, she was by the door and had the door kicked in, her face was smashed in."

Neighbors tonight said they’re nervous with those armed killers still on the run.

"I kinda try to stay vigilant and make sure someone is always watching my mom," said neighbor Cynthia Anderson.

Family members told police the names of the two people they think are responsible.

Dallas police said they're searching for 27-year-old Obra Louis London in connection with the killing. He was identified by witnesses at the residence.

NBC 5's Todd L. Davis and Frank Heinz contributed to this report.
