Dallas Police Reveal More Information on Massive Drop in Crime

Dallas city leaders shared more information Monday regarding an earlier report of a huge drop in the city's crime rate.

In January, the Dallas Police Department reported in 2013 the city had the lowest overall crime rate in 47 years, including a 45 percent reduction in overall crime and a 50 percent violent crime rate reduction in over 10 years.

During a committee meeting Monday, the latest figures comparing 2012 and 2013 were presented which show a drop in all major crime categories except for sexual assault.

In a discussion with NBC 5 last month, Dallas Chief of Police David Brown said a plan to reduce sexual assaults in the city would likely result in an increase in reported attacks this year — something he believes may end up helping victims in the long run.

"This will sound counter intuitive," Brown responded, "But because sexual assaults are the most under reported crime, our sexual assault awareness campaign efforts may very well increase reported sexual crimes."

While comparing 2012 and 2013, the department is reporting a 60 percent drop in murders from 20 to eight; a 17 percent drop in robberies and a 22 percent drop in aggravated assaults.
