Dallas Minister to Perform Same-Sex Weddings

Retired Methodist minister breaks with church tradition

A Dallas minister says he will begin performing same-sex weddings.

Emeritus Pastor Reverend Bill McElvaney announced his decision Sunday at his church, Northaven United Methodist in North Dallas.

The move to perform same-sex weddings defies church law. However, McElvaney said the decision is based on "acceptance."

"It's all about acceptance as human beings," McElvaney said, in part. "About not having one's worth voted on by peers who believe a few scriptural passages..."

As McElvaney is retired, the chances of punishment from the Methodist Church may be lower. The church has not commented on McElvaney's decision.

Same-sex marriage is not recognized by the State of Texas.
