Police said the woman left her vehicle running as she went to the door at about 7 a.m. to pick up a man, later identified as Johnny Warfield, at his home on the 1200 block of Dalview Avenue.

The unnamed woman and Warfield then noticed someone inside her car.

"They left the residence and approached the suspect while he was inside the car," Dallas Police Department spokesman Senior Cpl. DeMarquis Black said. "A struggled ensued, and the suspect shot [Warfield] in the shoulder area and, I believe, somewhere in the chest."

The thief then drove away in the woman's light blue Dodge Aries.

Warfield, who is in his 50s, was hospitalized in stable condition and was in surgery Tuesday morning, police said. He is expected to survive.

Dallas police have not released a description of the thief, who remains at large.
