Dallas Love Field Growth Continues Post Wright Amendment

Dallas City Council was briefed on the unprecedented growth at Dallas Love Field Wednesday.

Since the expiration of the Wright Amendment in 2014, the 'Dallas Love Field Update' prepared for the council indicates all aspects of Love Field have been impacted by the increase in travelers.

One issue many fliers identified Wednesday is parking.

"Well, A is full, short term is full, and the B lot is pretty full," said traveler Rod Kinard Wednesday. "I found one spot at the very back corner of the lot."

Kinard says he traveler during off-peak hours, but finds parking a challenge. "The only time I run into any issues is when I get there in the middle a day is finding a spot to park," he said.

According to the council briefing, current projections show Love Field will have the following future parking requirements:

  • 2015: approximately 1,000 spaces
  • 2017: approximately 2,400 spaces
  • 2020: approximately 3,500 – 4,000 spaces

A future parking garage is planned and expected to add thousands more spaces.

In addition, ongoing construction continues. Spokesman Jose Luis Torres says crews continue work on the airport's apron. That construction is why signs at baggage claim read: "Welcome to Dallas, We're glad you're here! However, your bags may take a little longer to get here from the plane. We still have a little more construction to complete."

Torres says some baggage tubs have to go around the construction and it takes longer to deliver to the carousels.

Some travelers say they've noticed slight delays, but others haven't had any problems.

"I would say that I had better experiences before they had this baggage system," said traveler Sean Agahi.

Still, most say any inconvenience from ongoing construction is worth it for Love Field's drastic transformation.

"It has been incredible just the growth, how open and clean everything is here, and it's very pleasant to be in the Love Field area now, especially since Southwest has opened non-stop flights, it has been great to fly out of here," said traveler Kristyn Cobb.
