Dallas Homeowner Comes Face-to-Face With Thief

A North Dallas homeowner is warning others to lock their doors and windows after coming face-to-face with a crook early Thursday morning on Hampstead Lane.

Tracey Murtha had just finished walking her dog when something caught her eye on the porch.

"He had a black stocking cap on, black ski mask, black, sort of, football letterman’s jacket without the letters on it," said Murtha.

In that moment, as she stepped out on to the porch, she realized this was a thief.

"I wasn't sure what to do at that point," she explained "So I just screamed in a deep voice, ‘My dog will kill you!’"

The thief took off and scaled a wooden fence taller than 8 feet in height.

Police showed up soon after and discovered a neighbor's credit cards and purse contents in Murtha’s front yard.

Dallas police believe the crook was behind several car break-ins in the neighborhood and may have broken into a home on nearby Greenwich Lane.

Murtha believes the crook was casing her home, looking through the glass sliding door.

Both the homeowner and police are warning people to keep those doors and windows locked.
