Dallas Furloughs Confuse, Frustrate Residents

Dozens turned away from library, city hall

Dallas residents were frustrated and confused Monday as they discovered nearly all city employees were on a forced vacation.

Dozens of people were turned away from the library, and other city buildings, Monday due to the first of two city council approved furlough days.

The city council recently approved the furloughs, shutting down all non-essential city services, and forcing employees to sacrifice a day's wages to help save nearly $2 million on the budget.

Some employees and city residents said the city council should have found other ways to cut costs.

The city's next furlough day is Sept. 4, the Friday before Labor Day.
