Dallas County Rejects Plan for Video Jail Visits

Dallas County commissioners have decided to reject a video visit system that could have ended most in-person visits at the county jail.

Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday said they still want to introduce video visitation at the jail but not at the expense of eliminating all personal visits.

The Dallas Morning News reports commissioners were considering a three-year plan to introduce video chats costing $10 per 20-minute visit. The county would have received up to 25 percent commission on the calls.

Inmate advocacy groups had argued the system profits off inmates and their families.

County Judge Clay Jenkins had opposed the plan, calling it "insidious."
