Dallas City Council Set To Pass Curfew For Kids

Dallas City Council members have set a date for a public meeting regarding a curfew for kids.

The curfew would keep kids 16 and under off the streets late at night and during school hours.

A curfew had already been in place until six months ago. Council members said the ordinance expired.

“There was an automatic sunset on the ordinance so we could review the issue,” Councilman Phillip Kingston said.

The Dallas Police Department urged the council to approve another curfew earlier this week.

The hours of the curfew would be from midnight to 6 a.m. and from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Police said the curfew helps curb juvenile arrests and property damage.

However, Kingston is not sold on the idea.

“The curfew hasn’t proven to have any crime-fighting impact,” he said.

Councilwoman Tiffinni Young believes it is a good idea.

“It’s another tool for the Dallas Police Department to use to keep kids off the streets and safe.

The public hearing on the curfew is set for Dec. 9 at City Hall.
