SMU COLD CASE TRIAL
The trial for a prison inmate charged in the 1984 killing of a Southern Methodist University student is under way, the Associated Press reports. Two years ago, inmate Donald Andrew Bess, 61, was charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Angela Samota. Samota was 20 when she was found dead in her off-campus apartment with multiple stab wounds. Authorities say DNA evidence tied Bess to the case. Richard Franklin, Bess’ defense attorney told The Dallas Morning News that because of DNA evidence his client may have raped Somata, but that evidence does not prove he murdered her. Bess is already serving a life sentence for three sexual assaults when he was charged with Samota’s murder.
FRISCO POLICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING
Frisco Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on June 1, leaving a man with a gunshot wound in serious condition. At about 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Frisco police responded to a call to a shopping center at the 12200 block of Custer Road. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man with gunshot wounds through his hand and leg. The victim was airlifted to the hospital. Frisco police believe the shooting happened in a neighborhood behind the shopping center.
RICHARDSON ROLLOVER
Richardson police are investigating a crash that left an SUV overturned and a pickup truck severely damaged. Police responded to northbound Central at Collins at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2. The pickup was headed southbound on the freeway and flipped over the DART HOV wall landing on its wheels, police said. Police have yet to determine the direction the SUV was traveling before it overturned. Richardson police report two people injured, one in serious condition and the other with minor injuries.
