Dad Put Bong on Infant Son's Mouth, Police Say

Two parents are in jail after a father allegedly put a bong on his infant's mouth while the man was smoking pot in front of his son, Grapevine police said.

Police said Julio Cesar Garcia, who turned 20 on Monday, put the top of the bong up to the mouth of his 13-month-old son, who was sitting in his lap.

"It was a pretty large bong," Lt. Todd Dearing said. "I don't think he could have actually gotten the bong in the child's mouth."

Grapevine police said they received a tip that a father was smoking marijuana in an apartment with his son.

"Through my years of experience, you see a lot of things," Dearing said. "Unfortunately, it's not surprising. But it's still sad, and you feel for the child, being put in a situation like that."

Garcia and the child's mother, Brenda Duran, 19, were arraigned in the Grapevine Jail on Tuesday morning.

Garcia is charged with endangering a child and possession of marijuana. His bond was set at $1,000. If convicted, he could face up to two years in jail and a $12,000 fine.

Duran is charged with endangering a child and was being held on $2,000 bond. If convicted of the state jail felony charge, she could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

"The mother's role in all of this was, she was in the room, knew the marijuana was being smoked with the child in his lap and did nothing to protect the safety of her child," Dearing said.

Their child was taken to a hospital for a medical review. He is currently in the care of his paternal grandmother, but Child Protective Services will ultimately determine who gets custody of the infant.

The case appears similar that one in Watauga three years ago, when 2-year-old and 4-year-old boys were videotaped being coerced into smoking marijuana by their uncle. The uncle is now serving an eight-year prison sentence.
