DPS Trooper Killed in Car Crash with Cow

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper died in a wreck in Montague County after his patrol car apparently hit a cow that wandered on to the road.

DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange Mange on Tuesday announced the death of 56-year-old Cpl. David Ralph Slaton of Bowie.

Mange says the accident was reported around 10:30 p.m. Monday near Ringgold, about 30 miles southeast of Wichita Falls.

DPS says the on-duty trooper was northbound on U.S. 81 when his patrol car struck a cow. The impact caused the DPS cruiser to veer into a southbound tractor-trailer rig driven by 37-year-old Brett Douglas Noga of Morrison, Okla. Noga was not injured.

Slaton, who joined DPS in 1974, is survived by his wife and a son.
