DPD Involved in Shooting Near Schools

Dallas police said they are investigating an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening near a pair of South Dallas schools.

The shooting was reported just before 8 p.m. in the 4700 block of Veterans Drive, just north of East Ledbetter Drive.

Police said a woman stopped her vehicle at an intersection when a man pulled up beside her in another vehicle. The two exchanged words, then the man shot into the woman's car, police said.

A Dallas Police Department spokesman said an off-duty officer was attending a family function when he noticed the altercation and then shot the man.

The suspect and the female victim were transported for treatment of critical injuries. Police said they expect both to survive. The officer was not injured in the shooting.

Harry Stone Montessori Academy was holding an open house directly across the street from the intersection where the shooting took place, according to the school's website. Sarah Zumwalt Middle School is also nearby. Investigators said they are talking to parents and students who witnessed the altercation.

Response to Officer-Involved Shootings

Earlier this week, Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins announced his plan to create an independent unit to investigate officer-involved shootings.

Meanwhile, a new group calling itself the Huey P. Newton Gun Club launched armed self-defense patrols Wednesday with one stated purpose: To protect Dallas neighbors from police. Huey P. Newton was a founder of the Black Panther Party in the 1960s and was killed by a rival militant in 1989.
