DNA Matches Texas Inmate in Houston Cold Cases

Houston police say DNA evidence has implicated a prison inmate in multiple sexual assaults since 1992.

Texas prison system records show Herman Ray Whitfield on Wednesday was in the Byrd Unit serving time for kidnapping.

Police on Tuesday announced Whitfield has been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and three counts of aggravated sexual assault. The results came as part of DNA evidence testing since 2013 on a backlog of police sexual assault kits.

Police say the attacks happened from 1992 to 1994, and again from 2006 to 2009, in bushes, on trails and at vacant properties.

Officials say Whitfield in 1995 was convicted of kidnapping, paroled in 2006 and returned to prison on 2009 for parole violation.

Online prison records don't list an attorney for him.
