Cracking Down on Teens Texting Behind the Wheel

Texas teenagers may have a tougher time getting their drivers license if  a bill sponsored by State Representative Larry Phillips of Sherman, gets the green light.

Phillips' bill would prohibit teens under the age of 18 from using cell phones while driving.

Some North Texas parents believe the bill is a good idea.

"I think they are on their cell phones too much," said Gina Hagerman.

Her son, Macon Hagerman, admitted not using his cell phone while driving would be tough to do.

"I rarely text while driving, but sometimes I still do, just a real quick one," said Macon Hagerman.

If passed, the bill would require teens to spend 34 hours behind the wheel with a driving instructor. Right now, teenage drivers spend seven hours behind the wheel with an instructor and seven hours as a passenger with a fellow student.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers.

Phillips said too many teen car crashes prompted him to want to toughen laws.
