Couple Accused of Swindling $13,000 Posing as Settlement Co.

Authorities say a Texas couple has been charged with wire fraud for swindling $13,000 from a north Mississippi couple while purporting to work as a debt settlement company.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said 50-year-old John Clune and 44-year-old Monica Clune are from Farmer's Branch, Texas. Both were charged Thursday on five counts.

Hood said Friday in a news release that the couple worked under the business name "A Different Debt Company," which claims to act as an advocate for people dealing with creditors.

Hood said the Clunes had no intent of assisting the victims with their debt.

Hood spokeswoman Jan Schaefer said the Clunes worked out of a Texas office. She doesn't know if the couple has a lawyer and no business listing was available.
