Controversial Medical Waste Facility Pulls Out of Mansfield

City, company agree to $475,000 settlement

For nearly a year, citizens and leaders in Mansfield have fought to keep a proposed medical waste treatment facility from opening in their city. Now, after a settlement approved this week, that fight is over.

Monday, the City Council unanimously agreed to pay RedAway LLC $475,000 to abandon its plans to open a medical waste treatment facility in Mansfield.

The Dallas-based company had leased a building at the intersection of Sentry Drive and South 2nd Avenue. Last August, it applied for a registration from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which would allow it to operate the facility.

According to RedAway's proposal, the facility would be used store, transfer and treat up to 50 tons of medical waste daily. There were never any plans to dispose of waste there.

Citizens raised concerns about the facility's proximity to neighborhoods and schools. The Mansfield City Council and Mansfield Independent School District's school board also passed resolutions opposing the project and asking the TCEQ to reject RedAway's application.

Much to their chagrin, the TCEQ approved the application in late February.

Since that time, the city has been in negotiations with RedAway to relocate.

Both sides released a joint statement on the settlement, which reads:

"The City of Mansfield and the representatives of RedAway Medical Waste have reached an agreement in which the company will no longer pursue locating its operations to Mansfield. A tenant has been secured for the location and RedAway is no longer tied to the lease on the facility. The City and RedAway have reached a settlement in which the City would reimburse RedAway for a portion of the costs the company incurred while preparing for its location to the Mansfield site. Both the City and RedAway officials are pleased to have the matter resolved in the best interest of all parties involved."

The Mansfield Economic Development Corporation will take over the remaining time on RedAway's lease.
