Coast Guard in Texas Rescues Family of 4 From Grounded Boat

The Coast Guard has rescued a couple and two children after their pleasure boat that ran aground during chilly, gusty conditions in South Texas.

Lt. J.G. Margaret Kratz said Wednesday that the family members were examined by medical personnel in Port Mansfield and did not require hospitalization.

The boaters used a cellphone to seek help late Monday afternoon. Strong winds had pushed their boat aground near the Mansfield Cut.

A Coast Guard helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer. Kratz said the swimmer waded with the boaters to an island, where the helicopter landed.

Authorities said the two children initially showed signs of hypothermia after a cold front dropped temperatures from the 80s to the low 50s. Winds topped 30 mph.

The Coast Guard did not release names of the rescued family.
