Plano police officers didn't have far to go when they responded to a fleeing theft suspect Thursday morning, as the chase ended in front of police headquarters.
Officers arrested the man — later identified as 18-year-old Nelson Mitchell Snider — suspected of stealing a woman's car in Garland flipped the stolen car on 17th Street before he was rushed to the hospital.
The stolen vehicle's owner told our sister station Telemundo 39 that she also called the manufacturer and, by using GPS, was able to follow Snider's movement. When he stopped in Plano, the owner called 911.
Plano police said when they tried to stop Snider, he took off in the 1700 block of 14th Street. Officers chased him for less than a mile and said he lost control, hit a curb and then hit another vehicle before flipping over in front of the police department.
“They saw some flames, and it was smoking, so they didn't want to take the risk of it catching on any further," Plano Police Department spokesman Officer David Tilley said. "So they jumped up there, they busted out the window and pulled the driver out."
Snider was talking and alert, but had to be rushed to the hospital.
“The driver of the vehicle was very lucky, no doubt about it,” added Tilley.
