Charter Schools Get "Primed" to Open

New "Prime" academies will encourage academics, athletics

Cowboys legend Deion Sanders is making the move from the locker room to the classroom.

Two new charter schools sponsored by Sanders and business partner DL Wallace are expected to open up next Fall in North Texas.

Called "Prime Prep Academy," the first two schools will be set up in Dallas and Fort Worth.

Sanders and Wallace say the schools will offer state of the art technology in the classroom with top notch athletics after school.

“We’re ecstatic, elated, we’re so excited to get on with it,” said Sanders.

The schools will house about 750 students each. The campus in Dallas will hold grades 7-12, while the Fort Worth academy will hold grades K-5.

Sanders says the idea was born through summer camps he was a part of when he was in the NFL.

“We tricked them by using sports as a carrot to educate them. In summer months, kids go through an hour, hour and half of summer school,” said Sanders.

At the academy, that concept will be expanded into a school format.

The charter schools are open enrollment where the first enrolled will be accepted. Thousands are already showing interest -- not just for a seat in the classroom, but also for a spot on the teaching staff.

Parents will get their first look at what both will offer this week. Open enrollment starts in March.

Meetings for parents of prospective students will be held on Tuesday and Thursday. Further details below.
