Carrollton Police Warn Homeowners to Close Garage Doors

Police say open garages offer thieves convenient targets

Carrollton police are warning neighbors in town and across the Metroplex to close their garage doors this summer.

The reminder comes after a garage burglary in the 1300 block of Tierra Calle on Monday evening.

Police said officers were called to the home at about 6:45 p.m. The victim told them she found a man in her garage. She said she believed the man, who took off when she arrived, had taken several items.

The woman gave officers a description of the man's car, and police were able to quickly track him down.

He was arrested on burglary of a habitation charges.

Officer Jon Stovall said the man had property from the woman's garage, which was returned to her.

Stovall said such burglaries are common during the summer months when criminals are looking for crimes of convenience.

"Even when you're at home or on the other side of a backyard fence per se, someone might go into your garage and go shopping in your garage," he said.

Officers said the best way to avoid becoming a victim is to simply close your garage whenever you are not in it, even if you are only going to be gone for a moment or two.

They also said people should lock their home and car doors, which also tend to be heavy targets for thieves during the summertime.
