Carnival Worker Sentenced After Crack Shipped Inside Doll

A carnival worker from Texas who had crack cocaine shipped to him inside a doll last summer has been sentenced to three years in prison in South Dakota.

John Whitfield Jr., 56, of Houston, was convicted earlier this year of possessing drugs and paraphernalia while overseeing children's rides at the Sioux Empire Fair in Sioux Falls.

He was arrested Aug. 3 after authorities said they intercepted a package containing the doll stuffed with 37 grams of crack cocaine worth more than $8,000 on the street. Police say they found more drug evidence in Whitfield's truck.

Whitfield's attorney unsuccessfully argued at trial that her client never saw or possessed the package

Whitfield was sentenced Tuesday to the prison time and also ordered to pay more than $8,000 in court costs.
