Car “Explodes” After Crashing Into Bridge Over Joe Pool Lake

A driver is in the hospital this morning after crashing his car into a bridge over Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. Thursday when the car slammed into a concrete guardrail in the southbound lanes of Lake Ridge Parkway.

A responding officer described the crash scene as an "explosion" after debris was scattered all over the southbound and northbound lanes. The car's engine was about 100 yards away from the car.

The driver wasn't inside the car when officers arrived. The Department of Public Safety launched a helicopter to look for the driver.

A resident along Nautical Drive noticed a man walking down the street, about a quarter of a mile from the crash scene. An ambulance and police went to that location and took the man to the hospital to be checked out.

Police say they don't know why the man ran from them.
