A cache of weapons and explosives were found near the Rio Grande River along the Texas-Mexico border earlier this week, according to a report by Reuters.
The weapons were found by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Tuesday.
According to the report, the weapons, including six assault rifles, a grenade launcher, rocket launcher, 20 ammunition magazines and three packages of what appeared to be C-4 plastic explosives, were found in a black back near Fronton.
The weapons are similar to those used in the drug war in Mexico and were found close to a cartel battleground.
"Authorities stopped short of making any direct link between the guns and the drug cartels, saying only that they signaled a threat to public safety in both Texas and Mexico," according to the Reuters report.
Officials surmised that the weapons were in the process of being smuggled across the border.
