Sabine Jarvis Little League Holds Burger Fundraiser for State Tournament

The community of North Fort Worth is coming together for the love of baseball and to help some deserving young players.

The 10-year-olds on the the Sabine-Jarvis 10-U District Team are the only little leaguers representing Dallas-Fort Worth at the Texas West State Tournament this weekend. But the boys come from a low-income neighborhood and some of their parents need help affording the four-day trip to Abilene.

The Sabine Jarvis little league brings a lot of pride to the north side of town.

"This is almost like a centerpiece for our neighborhood," said head coach Rene Martinez. "We all grew up playing baseball around here, playing at Sabine."

Now the boys have a chance at a milestone for the whole community.

"Amazing, because it feels like we're doing our best that we've done ever, over and over again," said outfielder Bryson Tenorio.

This is their first ever run at state. Game one is Saturday night, and a win keeps them going through the tournament.

"We want to help out as much as we can for everybody to be able to enjoy it and be there," .

Sabine Jarvis has always made sure anyone who wants to play can, regardless of income.

"Our motto is if you have a will to play, you have a place to play," Martinez said.

Now that means raising money for the families' hotel rooms and gas for the trip, with a hamburger fundraiser.

"The burgers are gonna be good, so you're gonna want one," Martinez said.

It's taking care of the little things so the boys can enjoy the big ones.

"I've been playing baseball since I was two," said 10-year-old short stop Nick Martinez.

"Since I was two," Bryson concurred.

"Since I was three years old," said catcher Roman Corona. "You get to hit, make good plays and it's very competitive."

But competition aside, the kids know they've already won teammates for life.

"What I think of it is like another word for family," Nick said.

That family has deep roots and a common bond.

"They'll do anything to play ball," said pitching coach Brian Banner.

All are welcome to buy a burger to help support the boys from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Sabine Jarvis Little League field, located at 3604 Schwartz Avenue in Fort Worth.
