Burglars Hit Austin Zoo Gift Shop, Office

Supporters of the Austin Zoo are pitching in with donations after burglars hit the park early on the Fourth of July and took an ATM, cash and equipment all worth about $30,000.

Executive Director Patti Clark says she's mystified why someone would steal from a non-profit organization that takes care of animals.

Employees arrived Friday morning to find the zoo gift shop and front office ransacked.

But Clark says donations began almost immediately with a security firm donating new cameras, a locksmith installing new locks and others giving money.

She says the outpouring of support has been gratifying and illustrates a generous and caring community.

The burglary remains under investigation by police.
