Briscoe Memorial Scheduled for Thursday

Public officials and family members will gather at a West Texas church to remember former Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr.

A memorial service was scheduled in Uvalde, west of San Antonio, for Thursday morning at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Briscoe's remains will be buried in a plot next to his late wife, Janey, at a family ranch in Reagan Wells.

Briscoe died Sunday at age 87.

The lifelong Texan presided over the state from 1972 to 1978, at a time when Texas was enjoying the riches of an oil and gas boom. A conservative Democrat, he suffered a stunning loss in the 1978 Democratic primary. He considered running again in 1982 but never returned to public office.
