Birthday Gift Turns to Hassle

One woman's generous gift ended up being a total hassle for a poor guy who just wanted to fly.

Flyboarding is a sport where they hook a jetpack up to a jet ski and you're off and running. But when one North Texas man try to redeem his birthday gift, he said he was left high and dry.

Landin Linscomb saw flyboarding on the web and told his girlfriend about it.

"She actually found the place locally here, though, where we would be able to try it," he said. "So she surprised me for my birthday."

Linscomb's girlfriend purchased two non-refundable vouchers in 2013; two one-hour sessions for a total of about $400.

"My birthday was September," Linscomb said. "They said the season ended Sept. 27, so we were going to push it to the next year."

The next summer, 2014, rolled around and Linscomb became busy. He reached out to the company.

"They said don't worry this never expires as long as you have the vouchers in hand we're good to go," he said.

But this summer, Linscomb was not good to go. He said he gave them the date of the purchase and and they told him, "Unfortunately were not able to verify purchases prior January of this year."

Flyboard North Texas told Linscomb they needed the manager to approve the vouchers, but the manager wasn't around. Linscomb kept calling.

The Better Business Bureau said they haven't had any luck getting ahold of Flyboard North Texas either. Phylissia Landix with the Dallas BBB said the company currently has an F rating.

"The two complaints we received said that they either purchased something on living social or called the company directly and when they set up the appointment, the company was nowhere to be found," she said.

Linscomb finally did get to flyboard. He said a company that shares space with Flyboard North Texas offered to take him out, free of charge. Linscomb said he got a total of about an hour and 15 minutes of flying time.

When we talked to Flyboard North Texas about Linscomb, they told us they considered the gift certificate paid in full. The man, who wouldn't give us his last name, told us Flyboard North Texas equipment was used during Landin's trip. The man also offered to take Linscomb out again and give him more time than the gift certificates required. Finally, he said, part of the problem that Linscomb's name was not in their records since someone else purchased the gift certificate.
