Balch Springs Church Destroyed by Fire

A large fire destroyed a Balch Springs church gym building Friday morning.

The fire started around 4 a.m. in the 3700 block of S. Peachtree Road behind the main sanctuary of the Greater Apostolic Tabernacle.

The fire started small, but quickly grew to engulf the entire building. Flames were shooting 10-20 feet in the air at the height of the fire.

The church's pastor said the building is used for a number of activities, including Vacation Bible School next week. That event will now be cancelled, he said.

The church didn't damage the sanctuary and there were no injuries.

Firefighters from Mesquite and Dallas were on scene to help Balch Springs Fire. Extra crews were brought in because of the humidity and warm temperatures.

The fire woke up Carlos Lopez, who lives next door. He said his home was filling with smoke as the wind blew it into his house.

He ran outside and tried to do what he could to keep the fire from catching onto his property.

"I got the hose and starting spraying," Lopez said. He sprayed his dogs down too, just in case.

No other properties were involved in the fire.

A cause has not yet been determined.
