Austin Traffic Stop Yields $155,000 in Bundled Cash

Bundled money found inside door panels

A traffic stop on Interstate 35 in Central Texas has led to more than $155,000 found in the door panels of a vehicle.

The Austin American-Statesman reports an arrest affidavit shows the driver told police he picked up the money in Dallas and was driving to Mexico.

The driver was placed in federal custody on a money laundering charge. The bundled cash has been confiscated.

An Austin police officer last Wednesday pulled over a vehicle allegedly for speeding. Investigators say the man told police he drove his car from South Texas to Dallas, someone picked up the vehicle and returned it to him the next day.

An affidavit says police found the dashboard was cut and such alterations can indicate a hiding place for smuggled items.
