An Austin-area police detective is dead and a suspect is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after the officer was run over by a police vehicle during a traffic stop Wednesday.
Hutto police Sgt. Christopher Kelley died after he was fatally struck about 10 a.m., according to a statement from The Texas Department of Public Safety.[[309648431,L]]
Officials said officers were chasing 26-year-old Colby Ray Williamson, of Austin, on foot when Kelley caught up to him and a struggle ensued.
Williamson gained control of a Hutto Police Department vehicle and ran over Kelley before speeding away.
Williamson was later arrested and boked into the Williamson County Jail without bond.
Hutto police have asked the Texas Rangers to lead the investigation.
The police department and Rangers say no further information is available.
