Austin Airport Control Tower Reopens After Storms, Flooding

The air traffic control tower at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has reopened after more than a foot of water flooded the base during storms.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday announced the 240-foot control tower reopened following initial repairs after the deluge. Storms last Friday dumped more than 16 inches of rain in the Austin area.

The FAA says the airport's second runway has reopened since the control tower resumed operations Tuesday night. The radar room in the tower's base will remain out of service for several weeks while crews repair extensive damage.

Air traffic controllers in Houston have been handling airspace for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport since the storm. The FAA says it's completing tests of temporary equipment that should allow the transfer of radar services to controllers in San Antonio.
